With a Facelift, it is possible to rejuvenate the appearance of the face and neck, that has been lost over the years, as well as tightening the muscles beneath the skin. The objective is to give a more youthful appearance without looking false or overdone. The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, during which time the surgeon removes the excess skin, at the same time performing a tightening of the muscles, which will give a longer lasting result.
It is possible to experience some bruising and swelling, but this generally disappears in the following 2 weeks. The scars are usually of very good quality and well hidden within the fold of the ear or the hairline. Often Facelift surgery is performed in conjunction with Blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery, and where necessary, can be performed with a brow lift or liposuction for those patients who have a double chin. Following surgery, the patient will need to wear a surgical dressing which is normally removed after 24 hours. Thereafter, patients are required to wear a lycra headband that supports the treated area for two weeks. Patients are usually able to resume a normal social life within 3 to 4 weeks.
If the patient is a smoker it is imperative that they stop smoking 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery in order to avoid complications and aid healing. If the patient is overweight it is advisable to lose weight prior to surgery in order to achieve a better cosmetic result.
Facelift surgery improves the firmness of the skin of the face and neck and tightens the underlying muscles, but it cannot correct the fine lines in the area around the lips or forehead wrinkles. In these cases, in order to improve the overall result, further treatment with Botox or filler is advised.
As swelling and bruising subsides, the visible improvements of a facelift appear. Your final result should not only provide a more youthful and rested appearance, but also help you feel more confident about yourself.
Will the scars be visible after face lifting?
The necessary incisions are performed inside the hairline and in the natural folds in front of and behind the ears. During the first few months they can appear pink in colour but by one year they are usually practically undetectable.
How long will the result last for?
We can put the clock back but cannot stop time from passing. Therefore it is impossible to say what the results will be in 5, 10 or 15 years after surgery.
The duration of the results basically depends on the quality of the patient’s tissues and bone structure and a further revision lift can always be performed.
