Ear surgery is performed in order to correct prominent ears and/or asymmetry. It is usually performed under local anaesthesia with sedation and after a few hours the patient can be discharged.
In most cases Otoplasty is performed through an incision at the back of the ears, so that the resulting scars are practically invisible. The duration of the operation is about 90 minutes. The stitches are removed 10 days after surgery.
The aim is to achieve more symmetry and to give as natural a result as possible and in most cases the results are excellent.
Doctor’s Recommendations
If to begin with, the ears are very asymmetrical in shape, size and position, it is very important that the patient is aware that although a significant improvement will be achieved, perfect symmetry cannot.
Results
After surgery a dressing is placed around the head to minimise swelling and to keep the ears in the desired position. After 24-48 hours the dressing is removed and an elastic headband needs to be worn at night for 3-4 weeks. The patient can go back to a normal life during the first week. Discomfort is controlled with medication, and antibiotics are prescribed for about 1 week. The results are stable and only in few cases is revision surgery necessary..
Q&A
With a standard Otoplasty we change the position of the ears but we don’t make them smaller. Obviously by making the ears less prominent they are less visible and therefore the patient has the sensation that they are also smaller.
Yes, it is possible to make these changes at the same time .
