With liposuction the surgeon has the ability to reshape the body by removing excess fat in localised areas.

Liposuction can treat very small areas (knees, double chin) or larger ones (abdomen, back, hips, thighs and legs). Depending on the amount of fat removed and/or the extent of the treated area, the surgery can be performed under local, epidural or general anaesthesia.

The procedure can last between 20 minutes and 3 hours and the recovery will vary depending on the size of the area treated.

After the first week patients can gradually return to their normal every day routine. Patients can resume exercise after 2-4 weeks depending on the extent of the surgery and are asked to wear an elastic compression garment for 3-4 weeks. The quality of the result depends greatly on the elasticity of the patient´s skin prior to surgery. The fat removed will not come back in the operated area.

If you are in the process of losing weight it is best to reach your target weight before you go ahead with liposuction surgery so that the final result will be better.
It is recommended to stay out of the sun until all the bruising and most of the swelling is gone.

Results

Liposuction results will improve as the months go by, as swelling and bruising reduces, giving a noticeable improvement to the body line and a more harmonious silhouette. Usually the patient returns to their daily activities in a few days.

Q&A

When relatively small areas are treated (under the chin, knees, hips) the surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or under epidural. In such cases the patient can go back home on the same day.

The scars are minimal and practically invisible. The cannulas that are used are very fine (3-4 mm) and therefore the resulting scars are extremely short.

For the first month following the operation a compression girdle must be worn, in order to enhance the effect of surgery and reduce swelling.

Creams may be prescribed by your surgeon to make bruising disappear more quickly and after 1 week some lymphatic drainage can be performed in order to improve recovery.

After 1 week you can return to a practically normal life but active sport activities cannot be started any sooner than 2-3 weeks after surgery. Exposure to the direct sun should be avoided for about 4 weeks.

Liposuction removes the localised fat cells and the result is permanent as long as the patient maintains normal, healthy diet and exercise
